Win a Tablift Tablet Stand!

Wow! What a year it has been already! Although I've continued to be very active on Instagram and Facebook, my blog has been a little silent! Well maybe more than a little! :)
Well today, I'm bringing you not only a blog post, but also a giveaway!

Tablift recently asked me to try out their standing tablet stand with my students!

Well of course I had to try it out for myself first! I spend a lot of time on my iPad and while I don't  take it to bed with me, I do love stretching out with it on my sofa, so I was definitely excited to try it out.
I love that it allowed me to be hands free! I'm typically doing school related stuff on mine, or browsing Pinterest :) so the Tablift allows me to be able jot down those classroom ideas or recipes without having to lay my iPad down each time or put my legs up to hold it.
The legs are very flexible allowing you to put it in any position, and keeps the iPad stable even on uneven surfaces such as my sofa. These flexible legs also allow you to make it as high or as low as you'd like and make it super easy to store!
The iPad attaches easily and very securely with a stretchy band and the Tablift has 3 positions. You can position it straight up and down for sitting in a reclining position, slanted forward for laying flat in bed, or slanted back if using it in a sitting positon. It will also hold your iPad in the portrait position too. Oh, and it's also compatible with Kindles and other tablets as well.

One downfall I found was that I had to remove my iPad case to use it. My iPad would not fit in the slots with the case on it. Other than that, it's been  very useful and I like that I can be completely hands free while working on lesson plans and other stuff.

Once it was teacher approved, I took it to school and tried it out with my students. Again, I did have to take off my iPad cases, which made me a little nervous at school, but with how secure and tight the band holds the iPad in, and with how sturdy the legs are, I really had nothing to worry about. In fact, the classroom iPad on the Tablift has been actually safer, because some of my students have been known to slam down the iPads very roughly on their tables and toss them around inappropriately. With the Tablift they can't do that.

Two other bonuses I have found using it in my classroom are that it greatly improves student posture. My students aren't slouched down and over looking down at their tables, or placing the iPad too close to their eyes. Instead, they have to sit in an upright position in their seat with the iPad positioned at an appropriate distance.

The second bonus is that my students seemed to perform better on reading tasks. Since they are in an upright position and not hovering over the iPad, they have been able to visually track their reading much better. They don't seem to need to refocus as often or lose their place.

I also have a student that likes to stand. The Tablift adjustable legs allow you to position the iPad high enough to accommodate the standing position.

The Tablift did not work well on student desks unless they were standing, because in order to keep the flexible legs on a standard student desk, the iPad had to be positioned high. But it works perfectly on not only tables, but also for students that want to sit on the floor to use the iPad.

Overall, I really love the Tablift. I just wish I had  more of them! :) I'm taking the one I have home every night for me to use and at school I can only use it with one iPad. I wish I had one for every iPad, because I love that when students are using it, they're not slouching and laying across the table, they're not misusing the iPad, and they are visually tracking their reading much better.

Would your students or even you benefit from a Tablift? If so, you can easily purchase a Tablift here. The Tablift retails for $39.95. BUT, Tablift also gave me two to give away! :) Want to win one? Just enter the Rafflecopter below and two winners will be notified on Sunday. Good Luck!

Classroom Reveal & Decor Giveaway!

School is back in full swing for this teacher and lots of new changes! New classroom, new school, new grade levels and new decor!

My entire classroom was moved to a new school this year! We were moved from the elementary school to the high school. Our elementary school is now Pre-k through 3rd and our high school is now 4th - 12th. So instead of teaching 3rd - 5th now, I'm teaching 4th - 6th, so I got to keep all of my same students from last year! :)

I LOVE my new classroom! I'm in an indoor campus now, I have windows for once, two bathrooms, a storage room....and my room is huge! Come on in!
I typically go with only a color theme in my classroom, but this year thanks to Creative Teaching Press, I threw in a little emoji fun this year!

Students place their daily logs, homework, and agendas here upon entering the classroom. My room is usually a work in progress the first few weeks, as I continue to move things around and change things up. I'm planning to change these tags to emoji tags.

My storage room is on the right as you enter!

My lighting is not very good in my classroom. I love it because it is calming for my students, but not so good for taking photos. So excuse the dim photos.
 Here is my reading center.
 My math center.
 Teacher small group table.
Computer center. I'm still waiting for my other two student computers and I also have my iPad station set up here now too. (not pictured)
Morning Meeting whole group board.
My reading center. This center has already evolved, as I now have a chevron rug here, a bigger tent, and the books in the crates are now on a bookshelf.
Since I have two bathrooms, I decided to make one a student restroom and one a staff restroom. I think I'm going to change the signs to emoji signs. On the bookshelf is our IEP tubs and we'll be putting our Wilson Reading binders on the bottom shelf.
I love the counter and cabinet space that I didn't have in my previous classroom.
Our behavior goals bulletin board that my students state every day. (excuse the glare)
 Our birthday display.
 My new Emoji calendar set.
By my backdoor is my desk, treasure tree, binders, and incentive charts.
 Emoji incentive charts.
Writing center with rules and topic cards.
A peek at my desk.

I've already rearranged my student tables a bit and again, I now have chevron rugs on the tile.

Now who's ready for a giveaway?!
How would you like to win the ENTIRE EMOJI DECOR COLLECTION from Creative Teaching Press!!? That's right...the ENTIRE Collection.
All of this could be yours! Creative Teaching Press if giving one of my readers the entire Emoji Collection! Nearly 40 decor components are included. Just to name a few, the winner will receive nametags, nameplates, bookmarks, borders, die cuts, certificates, birthday crowns, stickers, calendar set, clip charts, lesson plan book, gradebook, incentive charts, welcome banner, magnetic borders, and much, much more....all Emoji themed! You can see everything in the collection here.

I can't wait to see who the lucky one will be that will win all of this awesomeness! Enter below and good luck! Winner will be announced on Sunday, 8/3.

Science Fair Kit Giveaway!

It's no secret...my students LOVE Science experiments! So when "Test Assured" wrote me and asked me to do a review on their Science Fair Water Testing Kits, of course I said, "Yes!"

We're always looking for new Science experiments, so how can you go wrong! Well let me start by saying, we really enjoyed the water testing kits! They were simple enough for my students to use and we all learned a lot about the many things found in our water.

This is the water testing kit I received from them in the mail.

The kit included 4 individual test kits. I have 11 students, so I divided my students into 3 groups of 3 and one group of 2 to perform our water testing.

Each student kit includes the contents above. I gave each group a different water source to test.
Group 1 - School tap water
Group 2 - Spring Water
Group 3 - Bottled Water
Group 4 - Mrs. Bender's tap water from home

Students got to test for Chlorine, Copper, Nitrite Nitrogen, Nitrate Nitrogen, Hardness, Alkalinity, PH, and Iron. Prior to testing our water, we discussed all of the above and why we did or didn't need these substances in our water, PLUS this handy little notebook included also explains each substance and has space for each group to record their findings.

My students had a lot of fun testing their water and matching their test strips up to the colors on the guide.

The water testing kits were so easy to use, even for my special needs learners! Students just dipped the testing strip into their water vial.

Then they compare it to colors on the easy to use guide to find the levels of what they're testing.

Afterwards, we tested the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in our water sources using the TDS meter included, which was a bit shocking for all of us, and extended our experiment even further.
The water testing kit did not include detailed information on TDS levels other than they should be less than 500 according to the EPA recommended levels, so I printed this one out from the Internet. You can print it here. This would be a nice addition to the kit.

This is our findings:
School tap water - 546
Spring Water - 80
Bottled Water (Great Value Brand) - 70
Mrs. Bender's tap water - 533

When you compare this to the chart above, the tap water in our desert is near contamination level. Which confirms why most people in the desert DO NOT or at least SHOULD NOT drink water from the tap.

Our results were so interesting and peaked such interest, that my aides and students wanted to test the water from their homes. I purchase my bottled water from a reverse osmosis machine, so I was interested in checking that too. So the next day the ones that remembered brought water from home and these were the results.

Aide #1 tap water - 613
Aide #2 tap water - 535
Student #1 tap water - 546
Student #2 tap water - 518
My reverse osmosis & purchased water (from a dispenser) - 50
My filtered water from a Britta microfiltration filter on my faucet - 525

We learned from these results that not only is it not healthy to drink our tap water here in the desert, but that an expensive Britta brand water filter system is not worth the money. We also learned that the water you purchase for 25 cents from the reverse osmosis machines is the purest and cleanest water you can drink, with store bought bottle water being the second.

My students really enjoyed these water testing kits and it was a great lesson on the harmful substances different water sources can contain and why people always say not to drink the tap water here in our desert.

These kits also serve as a wonderful activity for learning to follow step-by-step directions, comparing colors, recording data, and working together in a group.

I know some of you have students that would have fun with these kits too, so "Test Assured" has agreed to let me give 2 water testing kits away! Each test kit is valued at $30 and would be perfect for a fun summer school project, summer camp, or for next year's Science Fair! To enter, just complete two simple tasks below.
