Science Fair Kit Giveaway!

It's no secret...my students LOVE Science experiments! So when "Test Assured" wrote me and asked me to do a review on their Science Fair Water Testing Kits, of course I said, "Yes!"

We're always looking for new Science experiments, so how can you go wrong! Well let me start by saying, we really enjoyed the water testing kits! They were simple enough for my students to use and we all learned a lot about the many things found in our water.

This is the water testing kit I received from them in the mail.

The kit included 4 individual test kits. I have 11 students, so I divided my students into 3 groups of 3 and one group of 2 to perform our water testing.

Each student kit includes the contents above. I gave each group a different water source to test.
Group 1 - School tap water
Group 2 - Spring Water
Group 3 - Bottled Water
Group 4 - Mrs. Bender's tap water from home

Students got to test for Chlorine, Copper, Nitrite Nitrogen, Nitrate Nitrogen, Hardness, Alkalinity, PH, and Iron. Prior to testing our water, we discussed all of the above and why we did or didn't need these substances in our water, PLUS this handy little notebook included also explains each substance and has space for each group to record their findings.

My students had a lot of fun testing their water and matching their test strips up to the colors on the guide.

The water testing kits were so easy to use, even for my special needs learners! Students just dipped the testing strip into their water vial.

Then they compare it to colors on the easy to use guide to find the levels of what they're testing.

Afterwards, we tested the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in our water sources using the TDS meter included, which was a bit shocking for all of us, and extended our experiment even further.
The water testing kit did not include detailed information on TDS levels other than they should be less than 500 according to the EPA recommended levels, so I printed this one out from the Internet. You can print it here. This would be a nice addition to the kit.

This is our findings:
School tap water - 546
Spring Water - 80
Bottled Water (Great Value Brand) - 70
Mrs. Bender's tap water - 533

When you compare this to the chart above, the tap water in our desert is near contamination level. Which confirms why most people in the desert DO NOT or at least SHOULD NOT drink water from the tap.

Our results were so interesting and peaked such interest, that my aides and students wanted to test the water from their homes. I purchase my bottled water from a reverse osmosis machine, so I was interested in checking that too. So the next day the ones that remembered brought water from home and these were the results.

Aide #1 tap water - 613
Aide #2 tap water - 535
Student #1 tap water - 546
Student #2 tap water - 518
My reverse osmosis & purchased water (from a dispenser) - 50
My filtered water from a Britta microfiltration filter on my faucet - 525

We learned from these results that not only is it not healthy to drink our tap water here in the desert, but that an expensive Britta brand water filter system is not worth the money. We also learned that the water you purchase for 25 cents from the reverse osmosis machines is the purest and cleanest water you can drink, with store bought bottle water being the second.

My students really enjoyed these water testing kits and it was a great lesson on the harmful substances different water sources can contain and why people always say not to drink the tap water here in our desert.

These kits also serve as a wonderful activity for learning to follow step-by-step directions, comparing colors, recording data, and working together in a group.

I know some of you have students that would have fun with these kits too, so "Test Assured" has agreed to let me give 2 water testing kits away! Each test kit is valued at $30 and would be perfect for a fun summer school project, summer camp, or for next year's Science Fair! To enter, just complete two simple tasks below.

Easy Snow Blizzard Science Experiment

You must know by now, that The Bender Bunch LOVES Science. My students crave it and ask every.single.day "What's for Science?" When I don't have a science experiment prepared, I always feel bad because they look so forward to it every day!

We live in a desert where it never snows and many of my students have never even seen snow before. So this entire month I am trying to incorporate snow activities into our curriculum. Today we made "Snow Blizzards!" I posted a video of our blizzards on Instagram and Facebook and received such a huge response on how to do it, that I decided to share it in this blog post.

It's soooooo simple and so intriguing to children.

Here is all you need:
*White paint
*Baby Oil
*Warm Water
*Clear plastic cups
*Alka Seltzer Tablets
*Silver/white glitter (optional) I did not use glitter this time and it was just as great and one less step....and mess.

Directions:
*Fill each plastic cup 3/4 full with baby oil. (I paired my students up, so every 2 students shared a cup and worked together)
*In a bowl, mix 1/4 cup of very hot tap water with 1/2 cup of white paint together for every plastic cup. So if you are doing 4 plastic cups of baby oil, you would need 1 cup of water and 2 cups of paint.
*Pour a 1/2 cup of the paint mixture into each group's cup.
*It will sink to the bottom of the plastic cup.
*Give each group an Alka Seltzer tablet. I broke them in half for each group so both students could drop in a half.
*That's it! Once they drop in the Alka Seltzer tablet, the magic begins! Just observe and enjoy!

Your students will be oooohing and ahhhhing at the snow blizzard that takes place right in front of their eyes!

Tips:
*Make sure your water is very warm in order to dissolve the tablet and get the full effect, yet not warm enough to burn your students. We did this experiment 2 years ago, and had much better results when our water was much warmer.

*Be sure to purchase the regular Alka Seltzer tablets that are not flavored. I bought the "orange" flavored ones on accident and after a bit, the snow began to look orange rather than white.

*Once the snow blizzard effects stop, children can drop in another Alka Seltzer tablet to begin the blizzard effects again if the water is still warm.

If you own my "Science for a Year" resource, this Science experiment is included and includes 3 differentiated response sheets that go with this experiment and follows the scientific process.

LEVEL 1
 LEVEL 2
 LEVEL 3

A teacher notes page is also included that provides helpful tips, how it works, and lesson extensions! Children can also take their sheet home and perform the experiment with their family!

If you like this experiment, be sure to check out my "Science for a Year" Kit to discover more simple and fun experiments similar to this one. All experiments include 3 differentiated response sheets as shown above and a teacher notes page. With more than 100 experiments included, your science is covered for the year! Better yet, all experiments have been teacher-tested in my classroom.

And even better, new experiments are being added to this resource all the time! As I discover new science experiments for my students, you will receive these updates once you own the kit!

Tomorrow we are making homemade snow with shaving cream and baking soda and are going to build mini snowmen. This experiment is also included in my "Science for a Year" unit.

Have fun creating Snow Blizzards with your students! They will love it! Click on the picture below to pin it here or to save for later and share with others.

Do you do hands-on science experiments in your classroom?

I'm linking up with "Doodle Bugs Teaching" this week to share 5 random things about my week! I think October is all teachers' favorite and we've had so many fun things going on...it's going to be difficult to limit this to only 5!!!

We started our week out with this SUPER COOL Science Experiment! I mean really cool! Watch the video and you'll see exactly what I mean!

I told you!
All you need is a cup full of packing peanuts and Acetone. I would get more than a cup though, because your students will want to do it over and over again!!

We started our pumpkin life cycle project!!!

It's been fun for the kids watching for sprouts each day! This idea and the sign came from "Primary Techie" and you can read all about it on Primary Techie's Blog {here}. You can get her sign {here}. We don't have any sprouts yet, but we just did it on Tuesday.

Halloween Crafts!!!
Okay, I'm sneaking two in here!!!

 Cotton Ball Hanging Ghosts!!

 3-Dimensional Pumpkins
These were great for my students' fine motor skills and we discussed and compared the difference between 2-D and 3-D.

We started using my Money Mats this week and my students are amazing me! I have students working on all 3 levels!

Level One
